music and lyrics (circa 2003 - 2014)

I spent much of the ‘00s as a singer / songwriter playing the bar scene in NYC. If you are curious:

is my archived music website.

I believe in Wordsworth’s notion that the best poetry / writing comes as a result of the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings… recollected in tranquility.” I didn’t have a lot of “tranquility” back then and worked out a lot of those powerful feelings on the stage. Check out the old music website for a sense of who Abe was in the ‘00s.

My love of music and song was in me from the start and continues forever. And I’ve come around to the idea of being proud of my evolution as a writer and artist - which includes being a DIY / lo-fi / heart-on-my-sleeve singer, songwriter, musician.

(The last time I performed on stage was October 12, 2014. At my wedding. Am I aching to do it again? Yes and no. I can still hit the high notes, though. At least with a karaoke track!)

I’ve highlighted a few representative song samples below. I recorded all of these in my bedroom studio in my twenties, when I was figuring out who I wanted to be - and how I was going to get there.

And I’m still figuring it all out.

MUSIC BY ABE CHANG:

“under lock and key” - I consider this one of my best and a favorite to perform.

“reverie” - the one I have performed live the most and my most well-known song.

“bittersweet connection” - me exploring the synthpop / dance-y side of my angst! If it’s not your thing, fast forward to around 2:45 to check out the breakdown beats at least!

TWO COVER SONGS:

“high and dry” - Radiohead with a snippet from The White Stripes. I think I did the falsetto justice back then. (Now? Ahem. Challenge accepted!)

“here comes the rain again” - my take on the Eurythmics classic.
